Google's collaborations with producers for Nexus smartphones continue. After LG Nexus 4, will follow a smartphone made by Sony, with a different design than Galaxy Nexus, Sony Nexus X.
While LG has benn inspired by the design of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, this smartphone has Sony's Xperia series lines, both in the front and the curved back.
Sony Nexus X has a screen aspect ratio of 16:9, unlike LG Nexus 4 with 16:10, and the Sony logo is not present on the front of the phone, which has no physical buttons.

Sony might end up using the expertise of its newest acquisition, Gaikai, to improve its lineup of Bravia Smart TVs by allowing the devices to support cloud gaming without needing a dedicated console, at least according to analyst Michael Pachter.
Sony surprised plenty of people yesterday when it confirmed that it was buying Gaikai for a whopping $380 million (€301 million) and that it was going to use the company’s experience to build its own cloud gaming service.
Gaikai is one of the leading companies in terms of cloud gaming, allowing customers to play games on its own servers and then stream the gameplay to all sorts of devices. With this acquisition, however, quite a lot of people are wondering what Sony is going to do with Gaikai’s expertise.
According to Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter, while the Gaikai team will help out Sony’s Computer Entertainment (PlayStation) division, it might also be used to improve the Bravia TVs and other such devices.
"I think that this is more related to Sony's integrated strategy, and ties into their hopes of selling more televisions. I know that Gaikai was purchased by Sony Computer Entertainment, but essentially, they provide a solution to play games without a console, so they make a lot of sense if built into Sony TVs," Pachter told CVG.
"This could be both a strategic move to sell more TVs and a pre-emptive move to keep others from using the service. It's actually a very interesting deal, and the price is reasonable if it gives Sony an advantage over other television manufacturers while keeping the technology off the market so that others can't eliminate the need for a console."
Pachter also highlighted that Microsoft wouldn’t react to Sony’s move by purchasing another cloud gaming company, like OnLive, as "they are making the [Xbox] console integral to the delivery of television content, so they have a different approach."
As of yet, Sony has only revealed that it will use Gaikai’s expertise to debut a new cloud gaming feature, so we’ll have to wait and see when the first details will be revealed.

Sony is preparing a new phone Xperia series, which will be the first entry-level smartphone with Android Ice Cream Sandwich. The code name of the new Xperia is Sony ST21i.
The first pictures of Sony ST21i arrived accompanied by a modest spec sheet, but enough for many potential buyers, who prefer cheaper smartphones.
The new Sony smartphone with Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich will have a 3.2-inch HVGA LCD screen with a resolution of only 320x480, without BRAVIA Engine.
Sony ST21i uses a Qualcomm MSM 7227 processor, a single-core Snapdragon 800 MHz with a GPU adreno 200, the same graphics engine that is used by Xperia X10 mini. To be in line with the rest of entry-level specifications, the Sony ST21i camera is only 3MP and can shoot videos at VGA quality only.

American CPU maker AMD is rumored to be the manufacturer of choice for Sony’s new game console main processor and the GPU. Many of you would think that this is the first AMD-made chip in a game console, but that is not the case.
t may be the first AMD-branded chip, but it’s definitely not the first time the AMD team has worked on a game console.
Twelve years ago, AMD’s graphics division ATI acquired a graphics chip design company called ArtX Inc. The team at ArtX is mainly responsible for the graphics processor used in Nintendo’s GameCube entertainment console. It was called Flipper and by 2002 ATI was already announcing the shipment of their 12 millionth GameCube GPU.
Flipper was a 162 MHz chip with 3MB of integrated 1T-SRAM, running at twice the core speed. This memory was split into two parts: 1 MB for texture buffer and 2 MB for the frame buffer, both being clocked at 324 MHz.
The chip was built using 180nm manufacturing technology and had four pixel pipelines with one TMU per pipe. The memory bandwidth was at a maximum of 10.4 GB/s and the frame buffer peaked at 7.6 GB/s.
Three years later, ATI was designated to upgrade their Flipper GPU and to offer a new generation of graphics performance for the 2006 introduction of Nintendo’s Wii game console. The resulting solution was called Hollywood.
This was a two-chip solution made out of a new version of Flipper running at 50% higher speed along with an I/O and RAM controller chip called Napa. Built using 90nm manufacturing technology, these two chips sat on an MCM, along with an ARM 926 core, the whole package being baptized Hollywood.
Back in 2005, ATI was announcing that it was manufacturing the new GPU for Microsoft’s Xbox360 game console.
In 2006 AMD acquired ATI and by 2009 AMD was bragging about shipping its 50 millionth Hollywood chip.
Currently, having sold over 100 million game console GPUs and powering two of the most popular game consoles in the market today, it’s no wonder Sony ditched Nvidia as its GPU design partner and went with AMD.

Sony's PS Vita OS is already considered a success, although the quad core portable console has been launched recently in Europe and the U.S., so might port the OS on the phones and tablets. Clues in this direction came from Kazuo Hirai, who will soon be named the president and the CEO of Sony.
Kaz has been cited by the Japanese site AV Watch, which mentioned the official saying that Sony does not want that users to forget the Vita OS , but to remember it like a mobile platform, not just gaming. Vita OS could be applied to some future tablets and smartphones Sony, a move that will signal the transaction to Sony branding after acquisition of Sony Ericsson shares.
We should not expect a concrete solution right now, but we were reminded that the platform is built with the possibility of expanding to other hardware environments, in addition to the console.

Barely has the PlayStation Vita handheld console been released in Japan and already Sony has pushed a firmware update for the device, taking it to version 1.50.
Japanese gamers eagerly awaited December 17, as Sony finally released the PlayStation Vita portable console, after hyping it up with a passion in the last few months.
Sadly, it seems that new Vita owners, besides being affected by several technical issues, are already facing a constant annoyance, just like PS3 or PSP owners, as a firmware update has already been released by Sony for the device.
While no details are known about this new software, the 1.50 firmware is a mandatory update that needs to be installed if you want to go online with the device, so new owners don’t have much of a choice.
Expect the European or North American Vita models to already have this new firmware installed as standard, although who knows what other updates Sony will release until February, when the Vita is released in the rest of the world.

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. is predicting brisk sales, even though the launch may have missed some holiday shoppers. A successful debut would help the company offset the rest of its struggling business. Sony projects a loss of more than $1 billion for the fiscal year through March 2012, which would be its fourth straight annual loss.
In Tokyo's Ikebukuro shopping district, some 300 game enthusiasts lined up outside a major electronics chain that opened a few hours earlier than usual for the event. Many of the purchasers had made advance orders on the Internet so they could start playing immediately.
The device is a touch-interface and motion-sensitive handheld seen as a successor to the PlayStation Portable. Gamers can connect over cellphone networks and Wi-Fi hotspots, and use GPS location-tracking technology.
Television footage showed some shoppers unwrapping their new purchases and starting to try them out at the store.
"I'm so happy to see so many people lining up for PS Vita so early in the morning," Sony Computer Entertainment Japan President Hiroshi Kono wrote in his official blog after touring several Tokyo stores. "I can tell they had anxiously waited for today's launch."
For the Tokyo-based electronics and entertainment giant, the Vita is the biggest product launch since the PlayStation 3 console five years ago. It's also accompanied by two dozen software products — the largest number of launch titles in PlayStation history.
The Vita has front and back cameras, a touchscreen in front, a touch pad on the back and two knob-like joysticks. It will enable gamers to play against each other using PlayStation 3 consoles over the Internet-based PlayStation Network, a system that was hit with a massive hacking attack earlier this year.
Vita's launch will heat up competition with rival Nintendo Co.'s 3DS. Nintendo Co.'s 3DS had a disappointing start despite the company's efforts to market its 3-D technology, with critics complaining about a lack of interesting games. Nintendo ended up slashing prices on the 3DS within six months.
The companies are challenged by the rise of smartphones and tablets, through which casual gamers play inexpensive and simple games like the mega-hit "Angry Birds."
The PS Vita goes on sale in North America and Europe on Feb. 22.

New Xperia mobile phones should be unveiled to the world as soon as January next year, during the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the latest reports on the matter suggest.
However, unlike last year, when we saw the Xperia arc smartphone going official under the Sony Ericsson brand, next year’s smartphones are expected to be branded only Sony.
More than a single Xperia device should make it to the spotlight at the said event, and the company seems to have already confirmed that, via the invites it sent out to the press.
Sony plans on holding a launch event at 17.00 on Monday 9th January 2012, where it will unveil to the world a number of Xperia models, the guys over at Swedroid explain.
“Please see the attached for the invitation to Sony Ericsson at The Wynn Encore Hotel, where the latest Xperia models will be showcased. [Sony Ericsson by Burson-Marsteller public relations agency],” the invitation reportedly stated.
Considering the fact that Burson-Marsteller is Sony Ericsson’s PR agency for North America, chances are that the company plans a bigger push on this market.
What remains to be seen is whether the new Xperia devices will still be related to Sony Ericsson when made official.
Sony did announce not too long ago that it planned on phasing out the Sony Ericsson brand after it takes over the entire mobile business, but said that this was bound to happen only sometime towards mi-2012.
Another aspect that is still shrouded in mystery regards the handsets to be unveiled to the world in January.
Some of the latest rumors around pointed at smartphones such as the Xperia arc HD (Nozomi) and at an LTE-capable flavor of Xperia PLAY (in addition to a series of other models as well), but nothing is officially confirmed on either of them for the time being.

Sony may or may not have succeeded in giving the Tablet P an aura of awesome, we'll let buyers decide that on their own, but it did manage to make it stand apart from all other tablets out there.
Simply, it isn't actually a tablet, but two tablets that can fold together like a clamshell.
There was no shortage of media coverage for this thing ever since the first pictures of it trickled to the web, months ago.
The touch panels (there are two of them) have a size of 5.5 inches each and boast the TruBlack LCD technology which Sony uses for its BRAVIA HDTV series as well.
The NVIDIA Tegra 2 SoC is the ARM platform that lies at the heart of the gadget, so the TFT LCDs with resolution of 1024 x 480 pixels will definitely be put to work.
1 GB of memory backs the 1 GHz processor, while 4 GB of built-in storage hold the operating system and whatever files users wish.
Speaking of storage, a microSD card reader is, predictably enough, part of the product's configuration (for microSD and microSDHC).
Sony threw in a micro USB port as well, plus the obligatory 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR and GPS.
Other specs include an accelerometer, digital compass, gyroscope, ambient light sensor, built-in speaker and microphone, a 0.3 megapixel camera and on a front, as well as a 5-megapixel one on the back.
Finally, the Android 3.2 operating system runs on it for as long as the battery allows, which is up to seven hours.
No reviews of it are available yet, but one can get it for £499 in the UK, which means $773 or 582 Euro.
It will probably be cheaper than in the US when it shows up there, which should be soon, though.
