   Nokia has announced that the owners of Lumia 900, Lumia 800, Lumia 701, Lumia 610 and Lumia 510 terminals can check through the Zune desktop client if the update to Windows Phone 7.8 is available.     The canadian company, BlackBerry, has launched today during an event held in New York the new  Blackberry 10 OS along with two new smartphones: Z10 and Q10.
   BlackBerry Z10 is a smartphone with a 4.2 inch screen and a resolution of  768 x 1280 pixels (~355 ppi pixel density), Qualcomm MSM8960 Snapdragon chipset, 1.5 GHz  dual-core Krait CPU, Adreno 225 GPU , 2GB of RAM, 8MP camera, 2MP front camera and a Li-Ion 1800 mAh battery.
   BlackBerry Q10 is a smartphone with full  keyboard, a 3.1 inch screnn with a resolution of 720 x 720 pixels,  (~328 ppi pixel density), TI OMAP 4470 chipset, 1.5 GHz dual-core Cortex-A9 CPU, PowerVR SGX544 GPU, 2GB of RAM, 8MP camera, 2MP front camera, and a Li-Ion 1800 mAh battery.

   For several years, the Symbian platform, considered by many surpassed by the time and by the competition from iOS, Android and Windows Phone, has lost significant market share and generated increasingly smaller revenues for Nokia.
   Nokia has said in an official announcement that "The Nokia 808 PureView, a device which showcases our imaging capabilities and which came to market in mid-2012, was the last Symbian device from Nokia".
   One of the main reasons why Nokia decided to drop Symbian is  the very high demand decrease (67%) in one of the most important markets for the company, China, where the consumers have switched to Android and Apple smartphones.

   NEC, a manufacturer that activates on Japanese mobile phone market seems to have found the ideal way to combine the portability of a smartphone with the freedom offered by a large tablet.
   Medias W N05E is a folding phone with two screens, each with a diagonal of 4.3 inches and a 560x960 pixels resolution. Attached to the back of the phone using a hinge mechanism, the second screen can be opened and brought to the same level as the front display.
   This way the Android interface is extended to cover the whole working area and supports touch controls on any of the screens. Of course, black strips which remains between the screens makes impractical the viewing of the photos and videos, but for working with text documents, web pages, files collections or contacts browsing the advantages are obvious.

   Mozilla has presented today the first smartphones powered by Firefox OS, Keon and Peak, the new mobile devices are developed by Telefonica and Geeksphone and are designed for developers who are interested to test and create new apps for the new mobile OS.

   The Chinese company ZTE has announced its plans to launch smartphones with the operating system from Mozilla, Firefox OS in 2013, in Europe.
   To complete the project, ZTE has partnered with a mobile operator from Europe. Unfortunately, Chinese officials didn't give the name of the operator.
   Lixin Cheng, CEO of ZTE USA said: "We closely monitor the ecosystem and how it evolves", referring to Firefox OS which is still in development.
   Mozilla representatives have confirmed the existence of the collaboration with ZTE and they said that in the future devices manufacturing are involved also companies like Qualcomm and TCL.

   Samsung has introduced, at CES 201, a new hybrid mobile chipset, Exynos 5 Octa, with 8 cores.
   Similar with the 4-PLUS-1 architecture used by NVIDIA Tegra 3,  Exynos 5 Octa has four Cortex A15 cores  clocked at a maximum frequency of 1.8 or 2 GHz and four Cortex-A7 cores, clocked at a frequency maximum of 1.2 GHz. Data processing work will be divided between the different strength core, low or medium tasks will be executed on Cortex-A7 cores, once the necessary computing power will exceed their limits,  the big.LITTLE architecture will allow execution switching on the more powerful Cortex-A15 cores in about 20 microseconds.
   According to Samsung, the new Exynos 5 Octa mobile processor , which also marks the transition from a 32nm manufacturing process to a 28 nm procces will have a 70% higher energy efficiency than Exynos 5 Dual.
   Samsung hasn't confirmed the type of the GPU, but they said that the new processor will provide a computing power twice higher than that of any rival product currently available on the market. It might be accompanied by ARM's Mali-T658 GPU.

   Lenovo has introduced yesterday at CES 2013, the first smartphone that integrates the dual-core Intel Atom chipset for mobile phones.
   Lenovo K900 has a 5.5-inch screen, IPS display with 1080p resolution, 2GB RAM and 16GB of storage space. The smartphone offers a main camera with a Sony Exmor sensor of 13 MP and dual flash and ais accompanied by a 2MP front camera
   Announced two days ago, Atom Z2580 is the first dual-core processor for mobile devices released by Intel, it practically doubles the performance of previous model with a single core, Z2480. The new CPU is built on 32nm architecture, but the company will launch by the end od the year 22nm mobile processors.
   Lenovo k900 will be released in April on the Chinese market, when it will be upgraded to Android 4.2, the company said that it will be available later in other parts of the world.

   Qualcomm has presented today at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the new generation of mobile processors, Snapdragon Snapdragon 800 and 600.
   Snapdragon 800 is based on the quad-core Krait 400, clocked at 2.3GHz and  the Adreno 330 GPU, which is, according to the statements from Qualcomm, 50% faster than Adreno 320.
The power of Snapdragon 800 allows it to run content in Ultra HD resolution (4k - 30 fps).
Overall 800 Snapdragon will offer a 75% higher performance than the S4 Pro generation.
The 800 series will be found not just on top smartphones and tablets, but also on the new generation of Smart TVs and digital multimedia devices, according to official Qualcomm announcement.
   Snapdragon 600 is based on the dual core Krait 300, clocked at 1.9 GHz and the Adreno 320 GPU, and will have a speed comparable to that found on the S4 series. The Snapdragon 600 processors are designed for mid-range smartphone.
The new chipsets from Qualcomm are built on 28nm architecture and will become available to the manufacturers in mid, this year.

   Samsung has unveiled today a new smartphone that looks like Samsung Galaxy S III, Galaxy Grand is a smartphone with a 5-inch screen, an 1.2 GHz dual core processor and 8 MP camera.
   Even if the screen of Galaxy Grand is bigger than the screen of Galaxy SIII, the new terminal has a resolution of 800 x 480 pixels.

   Sharp Aquos Phone SH930W, the smartphone that offers a fabulous screen with the IGZO technology has been launched in Russia.
   Indium gallium zinc oxide (IGZO) is a semiconductor composite which allows the replacement of the common used silicon substrate with a material with 40 times more conductivity, resulting a higher pixel density and an improved response times.
   The price of the new terminal screen with a FullHD (1080p) 5 inches is about 540 euros, but it seems reasonable if we consider the other device's hardware features.

   Facebook app for Android devices has been updated to the 2.0 version, winning a significant performance increase.
   Available from yesterday through Google Play store, the Facebook 2.0 is a major revision to the famous social network dedicated client.
   Largely rewritten using the native code of the Google Android platform, the new Facebook 2.0 starts significantly faster and promises to double the performance in terms of speed, the displaying of the information from the Timeline and the images uploading.
   Among other things, the upgrade allows us to quickly move from one picture to another, without moving the focus off the main feed of informations.
   The Facebook 2.0 application compatible with Android smartphones and tablets, is available for free download on Google Play store.

   With the expansion of the Windows Phone App store, Microsoft has also announced a new feature for Windows Phone 8, which was actually present from the beginning but has not been used so far: the installing of applications from a memory card.
   Unlike Windows Phone 7, which has allowed to the manufacturers to provide terminals with internal storage which can be expanded with a memory card but imposing the encryption and impossibility of direct access or from other terminals, Windows Phone 8 preferred to use a more comfortable  MTP support. This option, probably caused by the disappearance of the Zune sync application, adds now the possibility to download applications and install them manually from the memory card.
   This option affects only the installation mode, without the possibility to use the memory card as a place for storing the data of the installed applications.
   Compared to Android, Microsoft has not made ​​concessions: even if the apps are stored and installed on the memory card , these require the Internet access to be checked and compared with the user's shopping list.
   Applications can be downloaded very easily now, an update of the Web Interface service is offering to the Windows Phone Store the "Download and install manually" button for downloading on a PC and installing them later.

   Nokia has launched a new smartphone with Windows Phone 8, Lumia 620, it looks good, has good features and an attractive price.
   Nokia Lumia 620 has a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 chipset with a dual-core 1 GHz Krait processor, an Adreno 305 GPU and paired with 512 MB of RAM.
   The 3.8" screen with a resolution of 480x800 pixels comes with the ClearBlack technology, Nokia says that it will be as visible, in daylight, as Lumia 920 and Lumia 820.
   The smartphone has a 5 MP with autofocus and LED flash that can shoot videos at 720p. It will be available starting from January 2013 at a price of $250.

   HTC will launch in the first half of next year, the next flagship of the company. Although we do not know for sure which of the circulating models will be the next hit of the manufacturer, it seems that HTC will propose to fans a premium device which have the codename M7.

   Nine out of ten smartphones sold in China are running Google's operating system, Android, according to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China.
   According to the same source the number of subscriptions in China has reached nearly 1.1 billion.
   In Q3 of 2012, 90%  smartphones  sold in China were with Android, according to research firm Analysys International. Apple has, at the same time, the share of sales of 4.2%, while Symbian has 2.4%.
   The main reason why Android has registered such a growth is the very aggressive pricing policy. The average price for an Android device was $223, very little compared with $726, the average price of the  iOS devices.
