(by byetech staff)While Apple refuses to give us information about the TV gadget that they prepare, Google is working on their home entertainment system, which they already test it in more than 200 homes. This prototype was recently approved by the FCC for testing and the first documents were filed in December but only recently settled.
It could be a media hub called Android @ Home, presented at the Google I/O 2011, but we can not guarantee that this is the prototype tested. Documents from the FCC indicates that over 250 such terminals will reach U.S. homes to get preliminary feedback. Now we know that the hub comes with WiFi, Bluetooth and find that users will connect the device to other gadgets via WiFi, including TV, gaming console, tablets and more.
It is rumored that we are dealing with a kind of universal remote control / tablet that also acts like user control of the house, heating system, security, door of the garage and lighting.

After it has been rumored that Google, Facebook and Twitter could be closed on 23 January ,the search engine giant Google said it joins tomorrow along with Wikipedia, Reddit and other tech companies to the protest against the draft law that aims to stop the online piracy.
Google will start the protest by adding a link to their home page that will highlight the issues of the SOPA.
The most drastic protest is the one held by Wikipedia which plans to shut down for 24 hours the English version of the site.
As we said before, the biggest fear is that if SOPA will become effective, will be like an entering into a new era of censorship, extremely disadvantageous for the holders of sites.

2011 was not very good for personal computer makers, sales in the United States recorded first annual drop last 10 years.
According to an IDC study of PC market U.S. had "the second worst year in history", while sales fell by 4.9% compared to 2010.
The reasons for this decline include poor economy, the flooding in Thailand which caused problems regarding component stocks, and more fierce competition that tablets and smartphones make to the classic PC.
Despite this, industry experts expect that the PC to return to growth later this year. This is because the second half of 2012 will bring new products and technologies that will kick off a new evonomic cycle to this market.
Worldwide sales of PCs dropped too. At the level of the fourth quarter, 92.7 million PCs were shipped worldwide, with 0.2% fewer than the same period of 2010.

Italy's antitrust authorities had fined Apple with 900,000 euros for failing to guarantee free technical support services during 2 years for the company's products.
Sales outlets and Apple sites not properly informed customers regarding free services for two years, provided in the consumer's code.
The information provided by Apple aroused the customers to sign a fee contract that was partly covering the additional services that should have been free, said the institution, who asked the U.S. company to publish its decision on its Internet site.

There seems to be no end to the number of Android-running devices that make their appearance these days, and recently a company going by the name of Shenzhen Geniatech thought to add Google’s OS to a new ARM-powered set-top box.
The device, which is called the Enjoy TV, has just visited the FCC offices in the US to reveal a bunch of its secrets.
As Wireless Goodness has found out, inside this tiny box stands an ARM Cortex A9 SoC running at 800MHz paired with 512MB of RAM as well as an SD card slot, Bluetooth, two USB ports and an HDMI port.
The OS of choice is Android 2.2 and it supports 1080p video playback and all the other features that come standard for this mobile operating system, except voice calls.
For control users rely on a QWERTY remote that features an integrated joystick, the latter being added to replace the standard touchscreen.
There’s no mention of when this Android contraption will hit the US, but its recently obatined FCC approval means that we are getting closer to this date.

U.S. experts group from IBM believes that Machines will be able to read thoughts and even to recognize the identity of their authors will be built until 2017.
One of these applications will help owners of smart phones to dial a number from the agenda just thinking about the owner of that phone number.
At the same time, experts from IBM believe that the current password can be enhanced by biometric identifiers, using facial recognition and voice applications.
"Imagine: you could go to an ATM and withdraw cash, in complete safety, just saying your name and looking to a microchip that will recognize the retina," added the researchers at IBM.

Apple Inc supplier Pegatron Corp reported an explosion at a subsidiary's plant in Shanghai over the weekend that it said had injured 61 workers, the latest in a series of incidents that have spotlighted safety concerns at factories in China.
Pegatron Chief Financial Officer Charles Lin told Reuters on Monday that the explosion at the plant, which belongs to Riteng Computer Accessory Co and is located in Shanghai's Songjiang industrial park, had not caused a fire, but 23 of the injured workers needed to be hospitalized.
"The factory has not started operations yet. Part of the facility is still under pre-operation inspection and part is running trial production," Lin said.
Apple said it was investigating.
"Our hearts go out to the people who were hurt in Songjiang. We are working closely with Pegatron to understand the cause of this accident," said spokeswoman Carolyn Wu.
The accident brings the spotlight back onto safety concerns over factories in China that make most of the world's computers and other electronic devices, and over Apple's supply chain, which has come under criticism from the Chinese government, and labor and environmental groups.
Hon Hai Precision Industry Co Ltd, Apple's top manufacturing partner, has had two incidents at China plants this year.
In May, an explosion at its electronics polishing facility in the western city of Chengdu killed three and injured 15. In September, electrical cables on a building rooftop at a plant in the eastern Shandong province caught fire but caused no casualties.
The company also had a rash of suicides at its plants last year, blamed by labor groups on overwork and poor conditions.
Chinese state broadcaster CCTV aired a program on Oct 16 in which its reporters visited suppliers that Chinese environmental groups had said in August were thought to be doing business with Apple and had lax environmental standards.
The August report, by a coalition of Chinese environmental organizations including Friends of Nature and the Institute of Public & Environmental Affairs, said 27 companies thought to be Apple suppliers had severe pollution problems, from toxic gases to heavy metal sludge.
Taiwan's Catcher Technology Co Ltd, a casing supplier for Apple, was ordered in October to close a plant because of complaints about pollution.
But the companies are not the only ones to blame.
"I don't think the international corporates are doing any better or worse than the local companies," said labor activist Han Dongfeng of China Labor Bulletin, a non-governmental organization in Hong Kong.
"It's the many shortcomings in the Chinese labor laws and institutions that lead to poor welfare of the workers."
MACHINERY DAMAGE
Pegatron said in a weekend statement that there was some damage to machinery but it could make adjustments to the facility to minimize the impact on operations and revenue.
Riteng Computer declined to comment.
In its own statement on Sunday, the Shanghai city government said the explosion occurred at about 3:40 p.m. on December 17 at a workshop on the fourth floor of the facility. It put the number of injured at 57, of whom 23 had burns and were hospitalized for further observation, but none had life-threatening injuries.
Shares of Pegatron ended down 1.71 percent on Monday, trimming losses from a 6.7 percent decline at the open. The broader market fell 2.2 percent.
According to China's Yi Cai Daily, the plant would produce back panel parts for the iPad 2 and if the safety issue could not be quickly resolved, Apple's supply chain would be affected next quarter.
Pegatron declined to disclose details of the plant's customers. A source with knowledge of the matter said the facility would be partly used to make products for Apple.
Lin said resumption of operations would depend on the government's decision, and an investigation report by the Shanghai city government was expected later on Monday.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is developing technology that will allow students taking courses online to use simulated labs, interact with professors and other students, and earn certificates.
"The driver is to reach everyone out there who can't be here," MIT Provost Rafael Reif said on a conference call with reporters on Monday.
MIT is already known for its OpenCourseWare program, which offers some 2,100 courses online for free.
Until now, students worked through MIT course material on their own and were never tested. Beginning in a few months, however, they will be able to see sought-after professors in videos, engage in student discussion groups, and take examinations.
"It is making MIT available on a grand planet scale," said Anant Agarwal, director of MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. "This is a great way to marry our mission in education and our mission in research."
Students wanting to earn certificates through MIT's online program will have to pay a fee, university officials said, adding that fees had not yet been set. It cost $40,732 to attend MIT for one year on camput in 2011-2012.
University officials stressed that the program would not replace the campus experience and that online courses would be just as rigorous as those conducted outside the virtual world. "This is not MIT-lite," Reif said.
Since the OpenCourseWare program was launched nearly a decade ago, more than 100 million people have studied subjects ranging from Anthropology to Gender Studies. Courses in Linear Algebra and Multivariable Calculus have been among the most popular, MIT said.
Other U.S. schools, including Stanford and Yale, offer similar online learning programs.
MIT, renowned for teaching the sciences, has committed millions of dollars to the program and said it expected to raise additional money from foundations and other sources.
It said it would eventually develop other Internet-based options, including online assessments.

A consortium of private equity group Silver Lake, software giant Microsoft Corp and venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz are reworking their bid for a minority stake in Internet company Yahoo Inc, a source familiar with the matter said on Friday.
Silver Lake's consortium is working on a new offer for a stake of 10 to 15 percent in Yahoo after the company asked for improved terms, the source said.
The new offer would be predicated on Yahoo finding a new, world-class chief executive that the consortium would support, the source added. Yahoo's board fired CEO Carol Bartz in September and has yet to hire a permanent replacement.
The Wall Street Journal reported earlier on Friday, citing people familiar with the matter, that private equity firms seeking to acquire just under 20 percent of Yahoo were working on new offers for a smaller stake at a higher per-share valuation.
TPG Capital, which sources previously told Reuters had also bid for a minority stake, did not respond to a request for comment. Representatives of Silver Lake and Microsoft declined to comment while an Andreessen Horowitz spokeswoman could not immediately be reached for comment.
"As previously announced, the board is evaluating various alternatives as part of its comprehensive strategic review process, all of which are designed to enhance shareholder value and promote growth and innovation at Yahoo," a Yahoo spokesman said.
"The board's process is open to all alternatives and has not restricted the range of various options or proposals in any way," he added.
The first offer by Silver Lake's consortium valued Yahoo at $16.6 per share, about $1 per share less than what TPG proposed, people familiar the matter had previously told Reuters. Yahoo shares closed down 1.3 percent at $14.96 on Friday.
Yahoo has several available options. Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba, in which Yahoo has a 40 percent stake, is preparing a $4 billion bank loan to buy back that stake, Thomson Reuters publication Basis Point reported on Thursday, citing sources.
But Alibaba could choose to partner with buyout groups Blackstone Group LP and Bain Capital and Japan's Softbank Corp for a full-out bid for Yahoo, sources familiar with the matter have previously told Reuters.
Private equity firm Thomas H. Lee Partners is interested in buying the U.S. operations of Yahoo, people familiar with the matter have also told Reuters previously.
Yahoo's difficulty in competing with Internet heavyweights such as Google and Facebook have forced it to explore proposals to revamp its business. Yahoo has a market capitalization of $18.5 billion.

Apple Inc is famous for relying on low-cost Asian manufacturers to both source and assemble its popular gadgets, but the consumer device giant recently started receiving a critical component in its iPad and iPhones from closer to home - Texas.
The A5 processor - the brain in the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 - is now made in a sprawling 1.6 million square feet factory in Austin owned by Korean electronics giant Samsung Electronics, according to people familiar with the operation.
One of the few major components to be sourced from within the United States, the A5 processor is built by Samsung in a newly constructed $3.6 billion non-memory chip production line that reached full production in early December.
Nearly all of the output of the non-memory chip production from the factory - which is the size of about nine football fields - is dedicated to producing Apple chips, one of the people said. Samsung also produces NAND flash memory chips in Austin.
The South Korean giant began supplying the A5 processors to Apple this year from the Austin plant, the people said.
Apple declined to comment, saying it does not detail supplier relationships. A Samsung spokeswoman declined to comment on its customers and the specification of the chips made in its Austin plant.
But she said the company expanded the Austin factory to include a production line to make logic chips. The A5 is one such chip.
The powerful A5 processor, which uses technology licensed from Britain's ARM Holdings, is designed by Apple in California.
The A5 chip debuted in Apple's iPad 2 in March and now also powers the new iPhone 4S. The 120 square millimeter chip is twice as fast as its predecessor, the A4, which is also made by Samsung, according to reports from teardown firms that have taken Apple's devices apart.
TEXAS APPLE
Apart from Austin, Samsung has only one other non-memory logic chip factory, in South Korea.
Apple relies on its main contract manufacturer for gadgets, Foxconn, to assemble them, mainly in its factories in China and Taiwan.
The roaring success of both the iPad and iPhone has helped the city of Austin, where Freescale Semiconductor is based and other chip companies, like ARM, Intel and Advanced Micro Devices, also have operations.
Semiconductor companies are attracted to Austin because of a steady supply of educated employees from the University of Texas' engineering school.
Samsung has added about 1,100 jobs to support the new non-memory chip production in the factory, which produces 40,000 silicon wafers every month, a Samsung spokeswoman said.
The rest of Samsung's total 2,400 employees in Austin work in its NAND flash memory factory by the logic chip factory, she added.
The Korean company, which began the U.S. plant in 1996 to make its NAND flash memory chips, continues to produce them there in addition to the A5.
Samsung's factory is the largest foreign investment in Texas with a total investment of about $9 billion, according to Austin Chamber of Commerce.
Austin is also home to an Apple customer call center that deals with customer complaints in North America, Apple's biggest market. The Cupertino company employs thousands in that facility, who deal with calls ranging from complaints to support.
While Apple is one of Samsung's largest customers, both are arch-rivals in the smartphone and tablet marketplace. The two companies are also locked in an acrimonious patent infringement battle that spans multiple countries and products.

You know those sites that include a map, so you can spot the store or restaurant or whatever attraction you're looking for? Well, what if those maps knew where you were, and could guide you, turn by turn, to the establishment? Though that was a far-fetched notion not too long ago, the advent of HTML5 and mobile devices makes it a reality, courtesy of GPS software maker TeleNav.
The service, available for developers now, and scheduled for public launch in early 2012, lets website developers put turn-by-turn controls into their pages for free, including "full-color moving maps, audio directions and even automatic rerouting, if the driver misses a turn," according to TeleNav. The reason it works is because the latest browsers are designed to interpret more complex commands for multimedia and location services, collectively referred to as HTML5.
TeleNav is presenting this as a tool for shops and services to attract customers: “With one line of code, (businesses) can give customers one-click access to premium, voice-guided turn-by-turn directions to any location, including hotels, restaurants, merchants or deal locations," said Sal Dhanani, the company's co-founder and products VP.
I see this as, simply, the natural progression of things — if you can have maps, and have location-aware devices serving up those maps, how long before someone put two-and-two together, and built a website that could steer you around to wherever you want to go? Not long at all, it turns out.

Bill Gates on Thursday ruled out ever returning to the helm of Microsoft while dismissing criticism by late Apple founder Steve Jobs, who he called "brilliant".
Gates, in Sydney for a family holiday, said recent rumours that he was considering a full-time comeback to the US software giant he founded, but stepped back from in 2006, were untrue.
In an interview with the Sydney Morning Herald, he said he was busy working with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation "and that will be what I do for the rest of my life".
"I'm part-time involved with Microsoft, including even being in touch this week to give some of my advice, but that's not going to change -- the foundation requires all of my energy and we feel we're having a great impact."
The foundation funds health and anti-poverty projects in developing countries, including malaria research and vaccination programmes, and works with the poor in the United States.
Steve Ballmer, who took over from Gates, has been criticised by some for lacking the innovation that Gates brought to the company.
Gates has also faced his share of criticism, with Apple innovator Jobs portraying the Microsoft founder as "basically unimaginative" and an exploiter of other people's ideas in an authorized biography.
Gates maintained a long rivalry with Jobs, who died from cancer in October, and said the Apple boss was hard on Microsoft because "the Microsoft machines outsold his machines by a lot".
"But that's fine, he was a brilliant person," he added to the newspaper.
"Our work at Microsoft was super successful for all good reasons, but Steve made huge contributions and he actually in his last few years was a lot kinder than that. But over the years he did say some tough things."

Over the past decade, Americans have witnessed the rise of social networks and mobile technology that's put the Internet at an arm's reach, day and night — yet a new study has found that people are even more distrustful of the information they find online.
Three-quarters of Internet users find the Web an important source of information, but most people still don't deem the content they see online reliable, according to a report out this week from the University of Southern California.
Such are the deep chasms among Americans' attitudes about the Internet.
In 2010, 15 percent of Internet users said they find only a small portion of online information reliable. That's greater than the 7 percent who were likewise skeptical of the vast majority of information they come across on the Internet.
The mistrust is especially true for social networks. That said, people don't look to social networks for reliability. Rather, they visit the sites to socialize and share photos, updates and videos.
Trust grows when it comes to established media outlets and government websites. In 2010, 79 percent of Internet users said they found content posted on government websites reliable, about the same as in 2003, the first year the center looked at that question.
Jeff Cole, author of the study and director of USC Annenberg School's Center for the Digital Future, said Americans tend to be more trusting of government and big media.
"Other countries are better at distinguishing good information from (the) unreliable," he said. In repressive regimes where media is closely tied to the government, citizens grow adept at filtering truth from propaganda.
When it comes to privacy online, Americans are actually more concerned about businesses than the government, the report found. Nearly half of U.S. Internet users said they are worried about companies watching what they do online, compared with 38 percent who said the same for the government.
Looking ahead to the next decade, Cole expects tablet computers and other touch-screen devices to largely replace personal computers and with them, the clunky computer mouse.
The center has surveyed more than 2,000 U.S. households each year since 1999. The latest report is a look back at the past decade of Americans' Internet use. The margin of error is plus or minus 3 percentage points.

Almost a quarter of the European Union's 500 million people have never used the Internet and there is a widening division between the web-savvy north of Europe and the poorer south and east, figures released on Wednesday showed.
More than half the population of Romania and just under half of those in Bulgaria, Greece, Cyprus and Portugal do not have Internet access at home, according to the figures from Eurostat, the EU's statistical agency.
As well as highlighting geographic disparities across one of the world's most-developed regions, the figures underline the lack of opportunity people in poorer communities have to take part in advances such as the Internet that have delivered lower cost goods and service to millions of people.
"For many people today it seems difficult to live without the Internet," Eurostat said.
"However, a decreasing, but still non-negligible, part of the EU population has never used it," it added, reporting that 24 percent of 16-74 year olds across the 27 countries in the European Union have never accessed the Internet.
Although overall Internet access has risen in the past five years, the range is still wide, with just 45 percent of the population connected in Bulgaria compared with 94 percent in the Netherlands.
Others in the top tier include Luxembourg, Sweden and Denmark, all with access rates of 90 percent or above.
At the bottom end of the scale, 54 percent of those in Romania have never used the Internet, whether via home access, at an Internet cafe or over a smart phone.
Those countries with the lowest usage rates also tend to be those with the least number of fixed-line broadband connections and those that make least use of e-commerce -- buying goods and services online.
Online business is most advanced in Britain, Denmark and Sweden where it contributed between 5.8 percent and 7.2 percent of total gross domestic product in 2009, according to the Boston Consulting Group.
Britain, the EU's third largest economy after Germany and France, has become the dominant force in online commerce and government services, with more than 80 percent of 16-74 year olds making Internet purchases in the past year.
The lowest rates were again recorded in Romania and Bulgaria, with just 13 percent of those surveyed.
Perhaps one of the survey's more surprising results was that Spain, a modern economy at the heart of Europe, has a relatively modest rate of Internet access and e-commerce use: just 64 percent of households are connected and only 39 percent of people shop online, the figures showed.
