IBM said that it will ramp up efforts to sell cloud computing services to midsize businesses. The move is aimed at grabbing market share from companies like Amazon.com Inc and Salesforce.com Inc, which have been successful in the mid-market.
Mid-sized is apparently any company with less than 1,000 employees. The company's general manager in charge of small and medium-sized businesses, Andy Monshaw, said that cloud computing was now cheap enough to reach a bigger base of smaller customers.
Of course in some cases Biggish Blue will have to explain to the companies what a cloud is and why it is a good idea to have your data stored in a different place.

Intel has teamed up with Microsoft’s sworn enemy VMware to deliver a platform for "trusted cloud."
The technology will mix Intel's Trusted Execution Technology (TXT) and VMware's vSphere 5.1, platform for building cloud infrastructures. Intel said its hardware-enhanced security capabilities integrated directly into the processor combined with vSphere 5.1 would provide a hardened and high-integrity platform to run business-critical applications in private and public cloud environments.
Chipzilla thinks that the biggest barrier to cloud adoption is the fact that companies are worried about security. Jason Waxman, general manager of Intel's Cloud Infrastructure Group, in a statement that Intel TXT provides hardware enforcement to help overcome some of the most challenging aspects of cloud security, including detection and prevention of bios attacks and evolving forms of stealthy malware, such as rootkits.
Using VMware vSphere 5.1 support of TXT is essential to building a foundation of trust in virtualized infrastructures and the cloud and is ready for deployment. In cloud datacenters, servers are typically virtualized and shared across multiple departments or customers and are no longer dedicated to specific lines of business, creating new security concerns, Intel said.

Sony might end up using the expertise of its newest acquisition, Gaikai, to improve its lineup of Bravia Smart TVs by allowing the devices to support cloud gaming without needing a dedicated console, at least according to analyst Michael Pachter.
Sony surprised plenty of people yesterday when it confirmed that it was buying Gaikai for a whopping $380 million (€301 million) and that it was going to use the company’s experience to build its own cloud gaming service.
Gaikai is one of the leading companies in terms of cloud gaming, allowing customers to play games on its own servers and then stream the gameplay to all sorts of devices. With this acquisition, however, quite a lot of people are wondering what Sony is going to do with Gaikai’s expertise.
According to Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter, while the Gaikai team will help out Sony’s Computer Entertainment (PlayStation) division, it might also be used to improve the Bravia TVs and other such devices.
"I think that this is more related to Sony's integrated strategy, and ties into their hopes of selling more televisions. I know that Gaikai was purchased by Sony Computer Entertainment, but essentially, they provide a solution to play games without a console, so they make a lot of sense if built into Sony TVs," Pachter told CVG.
"This could be both a strategic move to sell more TVs and a pre-emptive move to keep others from using the service. It's actually a very interesting deal, and the price is reasonable if it gives Sony an advantage over other television manufacturers while keeping the technology off the market so that others can't eliminate the need for a console."
Pachter also highlighted that Microsoft wouldn’t react to Sony’s move by purchasing another cloud gaming company, like OnLive, as "they are making the [Xbox] console integral to the delivery of television content, so they have a different approach."
As of yet, Sony has only revealed that it will use Gaikai’s expertise to debut a new cloud gaming feature, so we’ll have to wait and see when the first details will be revealed.

Windows Azure cloud services will soon run a virtual machine for Linux, giving users a stable platform.
Yet in the beta phase, virtual machine developed for Windows Azure offers users the possibility to use an R2 image in Windows Server 2008 system.
In the spring of 2012, Windows Azure will provide the possibility of running Linux through a virtual machine without data loss.
Improved version of Windows Azure cloud system will also allow running SQL Server and SharePoint on the virtual machine provided by Microsoft.
Even if Microsoft considered Linux a hostile competitor in the past, the introduction of virtual machine for Linux on Windows Azure is considered a step forward for the company. Windows Azure could have such an advantage to the Elastic Compute Cloud, Amazon cloud computing service.

A new program for synchronizing files begin to take over Google Docs platform. It is Insync,a serious threat to the venerable Dropbox services.
Insync became available in 2012 after 15 months of development in beta. The service allows users to save, share and synchronize documents between multiple hard drives. To do this, Insync uses the "cloud" of Google Docs.
Insync members directly target the competitor Dropbox. They rely on the fact that the 50$ fee charged per year by Google for a 200 GB storage,is much less expensive than the rate of $ 240 per year charged by Dropbox for a storage space of only 100 GB.
However, the Insync site currently offers very few details about the functioning of the service, which determines some users to feel insecure about their document security.
Insync company said it will not save passwords, but just a code which linking him to Google Docs.

Sony Ericsson came forward with an interesting promotion about two weeks ago, which provided Xperia phones users with 50GB of free online storage via Box service.
However, the company pulled the announcement and issued a statement saying that the promo was mistakenly published and that the company is in fact in the middle of negotiations with Box to make the offer available for Xperia users.
Well, that doesn’t matter anymore as the handset manufacturer has just announced that the promotion is now live for all Xperia phones owners.
Basically, each Xperia phone user will receive 50GB of free online storage for digital content, including photos, music and video via Box application for Android.
“With people taking more pictures, listening to more music and watching more video on their Xperia smartphone than ever before, especially over the holidays, we wanted to make sure that they had the ability to upload their content to the cloud and share it across multiple devices,” said Steve Walker, Chief Marketing Officer, Sony Ericsson.
Those who wish to take advantage of the offer are required to log into their Box for Android account, or create a new one and access it for lifetime of account. There’s no need to hurry, as the promotion runs from today through December 31, 2012.
Box for Android application is available as a free download in the Android Market and is compatible with most Android devices, but Sony Ericsson’s offer is limited to Xperia phones.
The Box promotion begins on 15 December 2011 through until December 31, 2012, and is available to all consumers worldwide who own any Xperia smartphone including and released after Xperia X10.
“As more people bring their personal devices in to work to take full advantage of mobile computing, it is essential that they never have to worry about storage limitations. By partnering with Sony Ericsson we are bringing the full power of Box’s cloud content management and sharing to those users,” said Aaron Levie, co-founder and CEO of Box.
